Summary

CHICAGO, SOMETIME—Two people meet in the armory of the Art Institute by chance。 Prior to their encounter, he is a doctoral student who manages his destructive thoughts with compulsive calculations about time travel; she is a bipolar counterfeit artist undergoing court-ordered psychotherapy。 After their meeting, those things do not change。 Everything else, however, is slightly different。 Both obsessive, eccentric personalities, Aldo Damiani and Charlotte Regan struggle to be without each other from the moment they meet。 The truth—that he is a clinically depressed, anti-social theoretician and she is a manipulative liar with a history of self-sabotage—means the deeper they fall in love, the more troubling their reliance on each other becomes。 An intimate study of time and space, ALONE WITH YOU IN THE ETHER is a fantasy writer's magicless glimpse into the nature of love, what it means to be unwell, and how to face the fractures of yourself and still love as if you're not broken

One of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read。 It truly represents what it’s like to struggle with a mental illness while feeling the extreme emotions of falling in love。

Reading this made me feel so deeply。 Oh my god it is so beautiful and I am a mess。

wow olivie's done it again。 such beautiful writing, every word was a pleasure to divulge。 both regan and aldo are such intricately written characters and their story was just so unique and written so poetically。 they remind me of two unique puzzle pieces that only fit together。 i am so in love with this book and read it so sporadically because i didn't want it to end。 but i can't wait to revisit this book again in the future。 wow olivie's done it again。 such beautiful writing, every word was a pleasure to divulge。 both regan and aldo are such intricately written characters and their story was just so unique and written so poetically。 they remind me of two unique puzzle pieces that only fit together。 i am so in love with this book and read it so sporadically because i didn't want it to end。 but i can't wait to revisit this book again in the future。 。。。more

(Five minutes later) Actually。。。 no。 I felt this book too close too me, it made me feel sad and seen and destructive and fearful of the future and change and possibilities and of never finding anything remotely similar to this but also fearing that I would and would refuse it, or maybe it is that I have done exactly that and the finality of it scares me。 Excuse my rant。 Also, my previous plain review。 I almost loved this book。 I feel underwhelmed by the end, that's it, because a part of me alway (Five minutes later) Actually。。。 no。 I felt this book too close too me, it made me feel sad and seen and destructive and fearful of the future and change and possibilities and of never finding anything remotely similar to this but also fearing that I would and would refuse it, or maybe it is that I have done exactly that and the finality of it scares me。 Excuse my rant。 Also, my previous plain review。 I almost loved this book。 I feel underwhelmed by the end, that's it, because a part of me always wishes for heartbreak, but I don't think these characters deserve that。 I think their story is based on hope, and that ending was nothing if not hopeful。4。25 stars。Original review:(3。75 stars)Beautiful and poetic。 Not only the story, mostly the writing。 Olivie Blake is truly amazing, no matter what genre she writes or in what style she does it。 And I liked this even better when I read the author's note and what this story actually represents for her own love story。 。。。more

i am at a total lost for words。 this unequivocally beautiful piece of literature is an absolute work of art。 i could not possibly describe how magnificent this book is, so please if you have a beating heart, and breathing lungs, pick up this book and read it。 i will be re-reading this book a million times over, and am so glad that olivie blake exists to provide us with such divine works of art, such as this novel。

the symbolism in this is so pretty—i don’t think i could explain it any other way。 they began the story turning that corner, that one hundred and something degrees, and ended on the same note。 SO GOOD

I was simply enchanted by this story。 When I picked this book I had an idea this was not going to be an unicorns and rainbows love story but a more dark one。 I must say I was afraid of reading about the dark part of love that can lead to obsession。 However, I loved it。 This book was simply marvelous。

this book is special。 there aren’t the correct words to describe how it made me feel。 it is one of my favourites of all, and if i could rate it higher ofc i would because that’s only what it deserves。 it will stay with me- in my heart forever, untill the day i am dead。 <3 olivie i love your words。

4。5 ⭐️ This book felt like having a latte with cinnamon cookies in a cold afternoon in the museum but also like drinking a caffeine pill late at night while being an obsessed with academic praise anxious student。 Dont care if this made sense or not。 I love it。

*3。5* I may have just been to stupid to understand the complexity of their relationship but I often found myself lost in the endless paragraphs of philosophy and metaphors。 I think I would have enjoyed it more if there were more solid actions/evidence to why they like each other; things they’ve done together。 However the writing is beautiful and there are some really captivating and meaningful passages。 I wish I enjoyed it more and was able to fully appreciate it。

wish i could give this 6 stars

“If this is what it is to burn, he thought, then I will be worth more as scattered ash than any of my unscathed pieces。”there isn’t much i can say to do this book justice, truly spectacular, one of the best i’ve ever read。 i am a changed woman。 olivie blake, you are a genius and i am indebted to you forever for this masterpiece

dorothy

”with the way moonlight fell over them it seemed to him that they were each one half of a person, divided in two, each fraction left to be the other’s reflection。”i actually have no words。 this was so beautiful and special that i don’t think i’ll be able to read anything like it ever again。

Olivie Blake knows how to write a beautiful story。 Regan and Aldo’s story is a realistic love story。 It’s not all fairytales。 These characters are both broken, complex humans that learn what it means to love someone by loving each other。 While it’s hard, complicated, and terrifying, it’s beautiful。

4。5/5 stars So so good。 Amazing writing and depth。 Olivie does it again。 I love her writing style and the way she crafts a narrative。 This book was so raw and so real。 I found myself relating to Regan A LOT。 I loved the way Aldo loved her and even the ending which showed hope and growth of the both of them as a person and as a couple。 I really like the way Olivie writes about love。 I dont think I'll ever read or find a book as lovely as this one。 Definitely worth the staying up until 3am read。 4。5/5 stars So so good。 Amazing writing and depth。 Olivie does it again。 I love her writing style and the way she crafts a narrative。 This book was so raw and so real。 I found myself relating to Regan A LOT。 I loved the way Aldo loved her and even the ending which showed hope and growth of the both of them as a person and as a couple。 I really like the way Olivie writes about love。 I dont think I'll ever read or find a book as lovely as this one。 Definitely worth the staying up until 3am read。 。。。more

this is my new favorite book。 i finished it and then immediately got wasted because i was so upset it was over。 i feel like i can’t even describe how brilliant and wonderful and heartbreaking this book is。 i simultaneously want to recommend it to everyone i meet, and also keep it to myself because it feels too personal to share。

“if this is what it is to burn, he thought, then i will be worth more as scattered ash than any of my unscathed pieces”words simply cannot describe how i feel upon reading this masterpiece (a word not good enough, but it’ll have to do) of a book。 after learning that this book was going to be a love story, i was prepared to witness two people falling in love。 i should’ve known that it was going to be so much more than that。blake’s writing continues to surprise me, time and time again。 just when i “if this is what it is to burn, he thought, then i will be worth more as scattered ash than any of my unscathed pieces”words simply cannot describe how i feel upon reading this masterpiece (a word not good enough, but it’ll have to do) of a book。 after learning that this book was going to be a love story, i was prepared to witness two people falling in love。 i should’ve known that it was going to be so much more than that。blake’s writing continues to surprise me, time and time again。 just when i think she’s written the most intricately beautiful description of all time and that nothing will ever make me feel again, she does it all over again。this book was a rollercoaster。 authors often portray mental illness as desirable, romanticizing it beyond belief。 blake showed it with such magnificent delicacy that i forgot i was reading a story。 regan’s and aldo’s insecurities became my own。after reading this book, i will never be the same as i was, only very vastly different。 。。。more

oh man, it’s so hard to rate and review this。 i, too, thought it felt a little pretentious at first and then again somewhere towards the end, but that’s not the word i’d use to describe this book now that i’m done with it。 intimate。 unconstrained。 haunting? a little disturbing at times。 but extremely important, too。 let’s just say it made me feel a lot; it made me feel in infinities。

At this point I’m convinced Olivie Blake can do no wrong。 I am typically a fantasy lover, and after reading the Atlas Six and One for My Enemy I made it my mission to read the entire Blake library…and I loved this book。I loved the characters, I loved the writing, I loved the way the style of writing fell into rhythm with where the character were at in their mental illness。 It was believable, it was pretty, it was messy。 It left me thinking about mental illness, about living a daily life with a m At this point I’m convinced Olivie Blake can do no wrong。 I am typically a fantasy lover, and after reading the Atlas Six and One for My Enemy I made it my mission to read the entire Blake library…and I loved this book。I loved the characters, I loved the writing, I loved the way the style of writing fell into rhythm with where the character were at in their mental illness。 It was believable, it was pretty, it was messy。 It left me thinking about mental illness, about living a daily life with a mental illness, bringing someone into your mental illness…the characters navigation of these things rang true。 High praise。 。。。more
